Ever since humans began constructing tall buildings, the need arose for the safe and efficient vertical movement of people and goods. This need led, as early as antiquity, to the development of primitive yet functional lifting mechanisms.<\/p>\n

Archaeological excavations and historical sources reveal that in Ancient Rome, simple platforms tied with ropes were used, which moved with the aid of human or animal power. Frequently, slaves or prisoners of war undertook the lifting of these constructions, particularly in theatres and amphitheatres, where they were used to transport scenery or even animals.<\/p>\n

Similar practices appear in other parts of the world. In Tibet, as well as at the Meteora monasteries in Greece, people and goods were lifted in baskets or nets moved by ropes and hand-operated mechanisms. These means, although ingenious for their time, presented one serious disadvantage: safety was virtually non-existent. In the event of a rope breaking, the fall was inevitable and usually fatal.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

A characteristic story from Meteora tells of a visitor who asked a monk:<\/p>\n

The true evolution of elevators begins in the 19th century, with the introduction of critical technological innovations. The most important milestone was the invention of the safety catch device, which prevents the free fall of the cabin in the event of rope failure.<\/p>\n

In 1852, in the United States, Elisha Graves Otis publicly presented this new technology. In an impressive demonstration, he stood on a raised platform and ordered the ropes holding it to be cut.<\/p>\n

To the astonishment of the spectators, the platform began to fall but stopped almost instantly thanks to the operation of the safety mechanism. This demonstration constituted a turning point for the acceptance of elevators by the general public.<\/p>\n

A few years later, in 1857, the first elevator for public use was installed in New York. This elevator operated with a coal-burning steam engine and marked the beginning of the widespread use of elevators in commercial and public buildings.<\/p>\n

In 1870, the first hydraulic elevators also appeared in New York, which used liquid pressure to raise the cabin. This technology significantly improved reliability and smoothness of operation.<\/p>\n

During the 20th century, the development of electrical energy and electric motors led to the creation of modern electric elevators, with significant improvements in speed, safety, and energy efficiency. The development of skyscrapers would have been inconceivable without this progress.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Today, elevators are an integral part of modern life, equipped with advanced automation systems, safety sensors, and “smart” traffic management functions.
